John Wilks Booth was killed by gunshot, on July 7th 1865 Miss Surratt was hanged, Lewis Powell was hanged, David Herold was hanged, and George Atzerodt was hanged. They were all hanged at Ft. McNair at Washington DC. Their trial was by Military Tribunal. The other conspritors where moved to Fort Jefferson most where pardoned by president Andrew Johnson a few years later. This is the first time a woman was hanged. Union officers stood on a concrete wall and told the play by play to the people on the outside of the wall. Around 1000 people gathered to watch the 4 conspirators hanged to death. Before they were hanged, a few people were asked to dig shallow graves for the bodies. After the doors had fallen underneath them, they hung there for 25 minutes before they were cut down.
