Booth ran out of the back door jumped on his horse and steered clear of the man chasing him. He rode through the streets of Washington to the Washington bridge. Once he was there, a guard asked him if he knew that the bridge was closed. Booth said no and was trying to get back to his home in Maryland. The guard thought about and let Booth pass. Booth finally made it out of Washington and into freedom. He went to Surratt's tavern to pick up his supplies but he did not see Herold anywhere around. About 25 minutes after Booth, Herold arrived at the bridge. The guard asked Herold where he was going. Herold replied, "Home, I'm sorry that its late" and the guard let him pass. Herold caught up with Booth and they went to Dr. Mudd's house. At Mudd's house they hid in a barn while Dr Mudd cut his boot open and set his leg, the mistake Mudd made was that he stored the boot under his bed. Dr Mudd let them stay for the night and told him where to go before crossing the river. Booth and Herold had gotten lost when they came up on a local man named Oswell Swann. He hid them in the forest for a few days bringing them corn and wheat. The next few days they could hear the Union troops near by. Swann took their horses into a sinkhole and shot them. A few days later Booth was in a tobacco shop. When Boston Corbett saw him through a crack in the wall. He pulled out a rifle and shot Booth in the neck which punctured Booth's spinal cord and the hunt was over. This was the largest hunt for an assasin, the Union put out 10,000 troops.
